About

What does it mean to “cash out?” Well, depending on the context it can mean a lot of things. For purposes of this site, the term cashing out refers to stepping off the corporate ladder to enjoy a simpler life.

A Little About Me

Hi! My name is Tyler and I am a 30-something husband and father burned out with corporate America. I have worked in a corporate setting since I was 20 years-old. Back then I worked full time during the day and attended school with a full time schedule at night. I’m proud of finishing my degree, but it was a grueling path that left me burned out early on with a ton of school debt (student loans, credit cards, etc.).

My wife and I spent much of our twenties climbing out of this debt, and by 30 I was ready for something different. I began to investigate early retirement both as a hobby and as a future goal. I joined a few early retirement forums, picked up several titles on the subject at the library, and followed a few early retirement blogs. I was hooked.

What Will Cashing Out Look Like?

If all goes according to plan, I will be able to cash out in 10-15 years and have enough in savings to safely withdraw 3.5-4.5% for the rest of my life. Getting there will not be easy. With kids to put through college in a few years our expenses will be high, but we are committed to me leaving the corporate world by 50 (at the latest) and pursuing a second “career” free from the burdens of earning an income.

What I decide to do as part of this second act is still to be determined. I know it will involve working with young people, as that has always been a passion of mine. Perhaps I will teach, or coach, or become a mentor to kids in need of help. Regardless, it will be freeing to finally do something I was born to do, rather than doing something I am forced to do just to earn money.

This blog will chronicle that adventure, and discuss in more detail the nitty gritty of my financial plan. I hope you will join me, and that you will become inspired to investigate cashing out for yourself!
